In-Class Word Study Activities

Complete these activities in order by the end of the day Monday.

1-Complete the first sort activity page in your word sort workbook.

2- Complete the second sort activity page in your word sort workbook.

3-Choose a word study card and complete the activity described on the card. Write your work in your yellow spiral notebook. Be sure to write your name and the date on in the top right corner. Write the name of the activity at the top of the page in the top margin.

4-Complete a practice test. Write the practice test the other side of the page as your word study card activity in your yellow spiral notebook. Be sure to write “Practice Test” at the top of the page. Divide your page into columns and write the names of your headings at the top of each column. Have a partner call out your words. You write the words in the correct category column using the correct spelling. Use a pen of any color to correct any words you got wrong.


At-home Word Study Activities

Complete these activities in order by Tuesday morning.

1. All activities should be completed on a sheet of lined paper.

2. Be sure to write your name and the date at the top right corner of the lined paper.

3. Write Home Word Study at the top of the page in the top margin.

4. Write the title of each activity on the page just above where you do the work.

5. Be sure to staple all pages together if more than one page is used.

6. Have a parent sign your work.


1-Written sort- Divide a section of your lined paper into columns. Write the names of each of your categories at the top of each column. Read each word aloud and sort them into their correct categories. Copy the words in their correct categories using correct spelling onto your lined paper. Explain your sort to someone at home.

2-Blind sort- Place all of your headings onto the table. Have a partner at home call out the words. You point to the heading under which each word should go. Your partner should place the word in the category you chose. Check your work by using your written sort. Correct any mistakes and then explain your sort aloud to your partner.

3-ABC order-Sort your words into alphabetical order. Write your words in alphabetical order on your lined paper.

4-Practice test. Divide a section of your lined paper into columns. Write the names of each of your categories at the top of each column. Have a partner call out your words. You write the words in the correct category column using the correct spelling. Check your work using your written sort. Use a pen of any color to correct any words you got wrong.
